Top Dry Fly for Your Success

.

Fishing a dry fly is one of the most rewarding and elegant ways to use a fly rod. Which other way is there to to actually see the Trout and Grayling reacting to your fly! You see every little detail of the take. Last not least, casting a dry fly is a pleasure in itself.

In fly catalogues you will find innumerable dry fly patterns, some experienced anglers, however, tell you that three different patterns are just about all you need. Well, that's just two extremes on one subject.

About 15 years ago, I carried out the "three-patterns-experiment" for about one year, and I caught well. I have met plenty of situations, though, where I would have preferred a couple of extra choices. Here on this page I am presenting to you some patterns that I can recommend, based on my own experience. They are expertly tied and of high quality but not tied by Fabisch fly fishing

In your order, please add the last two digits to the item number to indicate hook size. E.g. Blue Dun, item DF01xx in hook size 14: = DF 0114. Just add the number of flies you want and you're done.

Which size to pick among several patterns is determined by many different factors. Here are a few basic rules to help you select the right size.

1) During the course of the year the proper size diminishes. Whereas you fish a dry fly #8 or #10 in spring, you may have to reduce the size of your fly down to #20 or even smaller by the next winter. Local events like the green drake hatch are exceptions to this rule which will last only a short time.

2) The faster the current, the larger the pattern. In fast currents, especially whitewater, the fish has only a moment to decide whether to take a fly or leave it be. Of course, the silhouette of the pattern should resemble that of the hatching insect.

3) Is the inversion of rule #2. In very slow currents the fish can inspect your fly very thoroughly. It may follow the fly for quite some distance before making a decision. In this case, smaller flies may be less suspicious.

The assortment of dry flies will be further expanded.
